A Barclays Bank executive earned £22million in salary, shares and bonuses last year, becoming the highest earner among firms in the FTSE 100 index . The total pay for Bob Diamond, head of Barclays investment banking service, dwarfed chief executive John Varley's salary and bonus package. Mr Diamond's basic salary was just £250,000 - with the rest made up of bonuses and cashed-in share options.

According to The Independent ,Diamond's 2006 earnings is a potential £42 million due to further award of 934,516 shares to Mr Diamond - worth nearly £7m at current prices - related to his work in 2006, although he will not be able to access those shares until 2010.If his Barclays Capital investment banking operation and other businesses continue the stellar performance of recent years, that could be increased to 2.8 million shares worth £21m, bringing the maximum total earnings from work in 2006 to £41.9m at current prices.
Varley received a relatively modest £3.2m plus £1.2m in shares for work in 2006 that will be available in 2010, rising to up to £3.6m at today's prices if Barclays is a top performer
