On August 10, China sentenced Canadian businessman Michael Spavor to 11 years in a Chinese prison for spying. He will also have to pay a fine and be deported from China, though they did not say when that would be.
Spavor and another Canadian Michael Kovrig were arrested days apart in 2018, shortly after Canadian authorities arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver, at the request of the U.S. where she is wanted on fraud charges.
The general feeling is that it is a case of mess with us and we'll mess with you which, if that is the case, shows how petty powerful capitalist powers can be - another area the working class have no stake in.
